Safety & Reliability Check Event

May 4 @ 9:00 am - 3:00 pm EDT

This event will be held on May 4, 2024, at the Varady’s house and garage. I recall that we have held this event for at least the last 10 years with one Covid exception. Similar to many previous events it will start at approximately 09:00. As we always have, we will have a lunch for those who are there. The menu has not been decided. At the March and April meetings, suggestions will be heard. The weather will hopefully be good. We will have coffee and donuts. Others can bring donuts or cookies. Many of you know how to get here, for those who need help to find the place, this link will lead you to Google Maps for directions.

Last year we asked Tony Gardner to help me set up and install an electronic distributor. It should help with your engine performance. I want to have the new one in for the July trip to the Asheville MARC National Meet. Others can follow how it is done. Tony has a tool to check the duration and other things. I have Randy’s Schwerdt’s tool to check and adjust the front wheel toe-in/out. I found this tool a lot easier to use than the other available chain equipment. This was valuable last year. If anyone needs to have their toe-in checked, we can do it and adjust your alignment to the correct specification.

I would like to set the headlight alignment but it is daylight and I do not have the necessary equipment or dark room to do it in. If anyone has the tooling and chart to see the headlight focus point, please bring it. The horizontal and vertical position of the headlight buckets are easily adjusted. The down the road position of the focal point is not so easily set.

Depending on the time and help available, we can adjust brakes. It would be easy to do an internal inspection and an adjustment to the brakes. Tony Gardner put on a seminar at the monthly meeting last year where he showed how to do an inside/outside adjustment. We can take a good look at brake linings and inside clearances to determine the overall condition. I have been a big fan of cast iron drum replacements. I have a few that have not yet been installed. The difference is substantial. On one of our cars we found bad front brakes and fixed them a few weeks later to acceptable stopping power with new parts.

We request and await suggestions to what else we can cover in the event. For new members and those who have new vehicles, this will be a valuable time to get to know the members and our capabilities. Some of you, not everyone, should bring a chair or two. Any suggestions for our agenda will be welcome.
