It's history now. The 2004 edition of the Smoky Mountain Model A Club [SMMAC] Knoxville, Tn. "Mountain, Music and Model A's" was held September 27, 2004 thru October 1, 2004 in Pigeon Forge, Tn at The Music Road Hotel. This year's event was special as it was sponsored by The Model A Ford Club of America [MAFCA] and was MAFCA's Southeast Meet for 2004. Attendee's came a far as Oregon, California and 15 other states to take in the beauty of The Great Smoky Mountains and East Tennessee. The week started with a welcome party of Ice Cream, Sandwiches, sweets and much more along with a favorite local Blue Grass Band. During the week seminars were held on Zenith and after market carburetors, F.A.S.T., top instillation, vibration elimination and a general roundtable discussion. The ladies were treated with a Fashion discussion and show. Two primary tours were held by SMMAC. On Tuesday a tour thru Townsend, Tn. To The Great Smoky Mountains early settlement of Cades Cove was made. The Cove is a one-way road of 11 miles and one of the areas most popular. The return trip took us thru Gatlinburg, Tn. The round trip was approximate 75 miles. The grand tour on Wednesday was "Over the Big Hill". This tour went over one of the highest peak of the mountains. I guess us "hillbillies" take our mountain driving for granted, but some of our guest were at first apprehensive, but with our encouragement and a quick hill driving lesson everyone became at ease. The only breakdown for the week was a blown head gasket over the mountain in Cherokee, NC. A phone call back to the hotel and a quick trip to Cherokee by our members with a trailer and he was back on the road the next morning. The Southeast Meet was climaxed on Thursday night with the Awards Banquet. This writer acted as MC and had the pleasure of introducing MAFCA President Al Stoll and his wife Sharon from California. Stoll presented SMMAC president Jim Sexton with the clubs 40th year MAFCA Certificate. Awards were given to the Hard Luck Driver, The Oldest Driver, Youngest Driver [2 drivers tied] and The Longest Distance. After being entertained by David West and the Cider Mountain Boys, Marshal Andy and special guest Barney Fife. Door prizes were given out with the help of Barney. A fantastic time was had by all and we look forward in seeing our Black Fender Friends soon.
